Sun Group has officially commenced construction on its ambitious US$2 billion Van Don casino resort project in Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province. This significant development marks a pivotal step for the region, aiming to transform Van Don into a leading economic and tourism hub. The initial phase focuses on building a 150-room hotel and a comprehensive convention center, laying the groundwork for a much larger integrated resort complex.
The project is situated within the Van Don special economic zone. It is designed to be a sprawling destination. Its features will include luxury hotels, expansive convention facilities, a championship golf course, and a theme park. Crucially, the resort will host one of Vietnam’s first casinos permitted to allow entry for Vietnamese citizens, signaling a major shift in the country’s gaming policy.
Pioneering Local Casino Access
The Van Don casino resort project holds a unique distinction. It is one of only two pilot projects in Vietnam that will grant local residents access to its gaming facilities. The other is located on Phu Quoc island. This policy change represents a calculated move by the Vietnamese government. It aims to harness domestic tourism and prevent capital outflow to casinos in neighboring countries.
However, access for Vietnamese citizens comes with strict conditions. To enter the casino, locals must demonstrate a minimum monthly income of VND10 million, which is approximately US$430. This financial threshold ensures that gaming remains regulated and primarily targets individuals with disposable income. Foreign visitors will not face these income requirements.
Van Don’s Strategic Economic Vision
The development of this massive integrated resort aligns with Vietnam’s broader strategy for the Van Don special economic zone. The government envisions Van Don becoming a vibrant administrative-economic zone, drawing substantial foreign investment and high-spending tourists. The Sun Group project is expected to be a major catalyst in achieving this vision, creating numerous jobs and stimulating local businesses.
Sun Group is a prominent Vietnamese developer with a strong track record. They are known for large-scale tourism and entertainment projects across the country. Their portfolio includes the popular Ba Na Hills in Da Nang. The company’s expertise is anticipated to ensure the high quality and successful operation of the Van Don resort. This long-awaited project has faced previous delays. Its official start now brings considerable anticipation and economic optimism to Quang Ninh province.
