Andrew Rhodes to Exit UKGC: End of an Era by 2025

Andrew Rhodes, the Chief Executive Officer of the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC), has confirmed his intention to step down from his role. His planned Andrew Rhodes CEO Gambling Commission exit is set for early summer 2025. Rhodes informed the Commission’s board of his decision at the beginning of 2024.

Rhodes took the helm of the UKGC in September 2021. He initially served in an interim capacity before being confirmed permanently in the position. His tenure has been marked by a period of intense regulatory scrutiny and significant change within the gambling sector. This includes leading the Commission through the comprehensive review of the 2005 Gambling Act.

During his leadership, the UKGC played a central role in the development and publication of the government’s Gambling Act review white paper. This landmark document outlined wide-ranging reforms aimed at modernizing gambling regulation and enhancing player protection. Rhodes has been instrumental in beginning the implementation of these new policy proposals across the industry.

Key initiatives during his time have focused on strengthening regulatory enforcement. He has prioritized promoting safer gambling practices. The Commission has also aimed to ensure that operators adhere to higher standards of social responsibility.

Commenting on his upcoming departure, Rhodes expressed his pride in the work accomplished. “I’m incredibly proud of the Gambling Commission team,” he stated. “We have made significant progress together.” He highlighted the “huge amount of change” that still needs to be delivered in the sector. Rhodes looks forward to new challenges after his time with the UKGC concludes.

A Foundation for the Future After Andrew Rhodes’ Departure

Marcus Boyle, Chairman of the UK Gambling Commission, praised Rhodes’ contributions. “Andrew has been an outstanding leader,” Boyle remarked. “His commitment to the Commission and to driving positive change has been exceptional.” Boyle acknowledged Rhodes’ success in steering the Commission through the challenging Gambling Act review process. He noted the effective start to implementing its recommendations.

Boyle emphasized that Rhodes leaves the Commission in a strong position. He stated it is well-placed to continue its crucial work of raising standards and protecting consumers. The search for Rhodes’ successor will commence in the coming months. This will ensure a smooth transition and continuity in the UKGC’s leadership.
