Danish Gambling Market Experiences Strong July Growth
Denmark’s gambling market reported a significant uplift in Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) during July 2023. The total GGR for the month reached DKK562 million (€75.4 million/$81.2 million). This figure represents a healthy rise compared to the previous month. It also shows a modest increase year-on-year. This positive trend highlights continued activity in the Danish gambling sector.
Overall Boost in Denmark Gambling Revenue
The July 2023 GGR of DKK562 million marked an 8.5% increase from June’s DKK518 million. It also surpassed the DKK555 million recorded in July 2022 by 1.2%. Despite this monthly and annual growth, the year-to-date performance shows a slight dip. From January to July 2023, total GGR stood at DKK4.18 billion. This is a 2.5% decrease compared to DKK4.29 billion during the same period in 2022. This indicates a mixed picture when viewed over a longer span.
Segment-Specific Performance: Online Casino Leads the Way
A closer look at individual segments reveals varying fortunes. Online casino emerged as the strongest performer. It generated DKK269 million in GGR during July. This was a substantial increase from DKK229 million in June. Furthermore, it represents a 20.6% jump from DKK223 million in July 2022. This consistent growth underlines the popularity and accessibility of online gaming platforms.
In contrast, the betting sector experienced a decline. GGR for betting reached DKK205 million in July. This was down from DKK214 million in June. More significantly, it was a 14.2% decrease from DKK239 million in July 2022. Denmark’s gambling authority, Spillemyndigheden, noted contributing factors. High comparable figures from the Q4 2022 World Cup skewed previous year’s data. Additionally, a new login requirement for betting was introduced in January 2023. This regulatory change might have influenced recent figures in the Danish gambling market.
Land-based gambling also contributed to the overall GGR increase. Gaming machines, found in arcades and restaurants, generated DKK57 million. This was up from DKK53 million in June. It also surpassed DKK50 million in July 2022. Land-based casinos reported DKK31 million in GGR. This shows an increase from DKK22 million in both June 2023 and July 2022. These traditional segments, while smaller, demonstrated steady recovery and growth.
