MA Sports Betting Hits Record $593M, Mobile Dominates

Massachusetts sports betting reached an unprecedented milestone in September. The state recorded its highest-ever monthly handle for sports wagering. The Bay State’s volume surged to an impressive $593.1 million. This figure comfortably surpassed the previous record. That earlier record was $565.4 million, set in March 2023. This strong performance highlights the growing maturity of the market. It aligns with the beginning of the NFL season.

Record-Breaking Performance in Massachusetts Sports Betting

The total handle of $593.1 million translated into substantial revenue for operators. Gross gaming revenue (GGR) for September reached $62.6 million. This generated $12.5 million in tax revenue for the state. These results mark a significant upturn compared to August figures. The handle saw a remarkable 121.9% increase month-on-month. Revenue also climbed sharply, rising by 113.7% from the previous month.

The state officially launched mobile sports betting in March 2023. Retail sportsbooks began operations earlier, in January 2023. This phased rollout has allowed the market to expand steadily. The September results demonstrate strong public engagement with both online and physical betting options.

Mobile Dominance Drives Handle Growth

Mobile platforms continue to be the primary driver of the Massachusetts sports betting market. Of the total handle, an overwhelming $582.4 million (98.2%) originated from online wagers. This illustrates a clear consumer preference for convenience and accessibility. Mobile operators collectively generated $61.1 million in revenue. This underscores their crucial role in the state’s betting ecosystem.

In contrast, retail sportsbooks accounted for a smaller, though still significant, portion of the market. Physical locations generated a handle of $10.7 million. Their total revenue stood at $1.5 million. While mobile betting leads, retail establishments still offer an important experience for many bettors.

Leading Operators in the Bay State

Several key players dominated the competitive Massachusetts market. DraftKings emerged as the top mobile operator. It recorded a handle of $276.5 million and revenue of $26.4 million. Close behind was FanDuel, with a handle of $171.3 million and revenue of $15.8 million. These two giants continue to lead the national market. Their performance in Massachusetts reflects their broader success.

Other significant mobile operators included:

  • BetMGM: $50.3 million handle, $4.3 million revenue
  • Caesars Sportsbook: $34.1 million handle, $2.7 million revenue
  • Barstool Sportsbook (now ESPN Bet): $24.7 million handle, $4.9 million revenue
  • Fanatics Betting & Gaming: $15.5 million handle, $4.5 million revenue

The retail market also saw strong contributions from established casino brands:

  • Encore Boston Harbor (WynnBet): Led retail with a $7.7 million handle and $956,878 in revenue.
  • Plainridge Park Casino (Barstool): Followed with a $2.2 million handle and $341,967 in revenue.
  • MGM Springfield (BetMGM): Contributed $829,081 in handle and $156,050 in revenue.

These figures highlight the diverse landscape of sports betting in Massachusetts. Both online platforms and physical venues contribute to the state’s burgeoning market.
