Goa Casino 'Mafia': Congress Slams BJP Protection

An Indian National Congress spokesperson has leveled serious allegations against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming widespread political protection for casinos in Goa. Pawan Khera asserted that the BJP-led government has shielded the state’s lucrative casino industry, leading to significant revenue losses and environmental degradation.

Congress Accuses BJP of Protecting Casino Interests

During a press conference, Khera highlighted concerns regarding unpaid taxes from casino operators. He alleged that the government has failed to collect billions of rupees in entry fees and other dues. This inaction, he argued, suggests a deliberate policy to favor these businesses.

Khera specifically criticized Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. He called Sawant the “Kingpin” of the “Goa casino mafia.” Such strong accusations underscore the political intensity of the situation.

Unpaid Taxes and Environmental Concerns

The Congress spokesperson detailed several key points of contention:

  • Uncollected Revenue: Khera claimed that casino operators owe substantial amounts in unpaid entry fees, potentially totaling hundreds of crores of rupees. He questioned why the government has not pursued these arrears vigorously.
  • License Renewals: Despite the alleged financial discrepancies and environmental impact, licenses for offshore casinos continue to be renewed. This suggests a lack of regulatory oversight or a deliberate bypass of due process.
  • Environmental Impact: The presence of numerous offshore casinos on the Mandovi River has raised significant ecological concerns. Critics argue these operations harm the river ecosystem. The government has seemingly overlooked these environmental issues.

Allegations of Political Patronage for Casinos

Khera’s statements imply a direct link between political power and the casino industry’s operations. He suggested that the BJP government’s failure to act against defaulting operators or enforce stricter environmental norms stems from a deeper arrangement. This alleged political protection for casinos is a central theme of his accusations.

The Congress party is demanding greater transparency and accountability. They call for a thorough investigation into the financial dealings of casino operators and the government’s role. The party also seeks immediate action on environmental protection measures. They emphasize that the state’s revenue and natural resources are at stake.

The allegations have intensified the political debate surrounding gambling in Goa. It places renewed pressure on the BJP to address concerns about the industry’s regulation and its economic and environmental impact.
