Platinum Gaming Limited, the operator behind the prominent online betting brand Betway.com, is facing a substantial penalty of £10 million from the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC). This significant fine addresses critical shortcomings in the company’s anti-money laundering (AML) protocols and social responsibility measures. The UKGC’s investigation uncovered a series of systemic failures that allowed high-risk customers to gamble large sums without adequate checks or interventions.

Serious Failures in Social Responsibility

The UKGC highlighted several instances where Platinum Gaming failed to protect vulnerable customers. One customer was permitted to deposit £187,000 within just two days, ultimately losing £111,000, without any meaningful interaction from Betway. Another individual was allowed to deposit and lose £34,000 over a four-month period. In this case, the operator relied solely on the customer’s self-declarations regarding their financial situation, without seeking any verifiable evidence. These examples underscore a concerning lack of proactive intervention and support for customers exhibiting signs of potential harm.

Systemic Anti-Money Laundering Lapses

The investigation also brought to light serious deficiencies in Platinum Gaming’s efforts to combat money laundering. One particularly egregious case involved a customer who deposited £703,000 and subsequently lost £500,000 within a year. Despite these high stakes, the company failed to conduct adequate source of funds checks, even when it became clear the money originated from illegal activities.

Another customer was allowed to deposit £1.6 million, losing £786,000. These funds originated from various bank accounts, yet the operator neglected to perform necessary source of wealth checks. Furthermore, a third customer deposited £330,000 and lost £160,000. This individual admitted to using multiple bank accounts to obscure their gambling expenditure, a clear red flag that went unaddressed by Betway’s compliance systems. Such repeated failures in anti-money laundering protocols demonstrate a profound disregard for regulatory obligations.

UKGC’s Stance and Future Implications

Richard Watson, the UKGC’s Executive Director, reiterated the Commission’s firm stance on operator responsibility. He stressed that gambling companies must possess a thorough understanding of their customers. They also have a mandatory duty to intervene proactively to protect individuals from harm. This £10 million Platinum Gaming fine serves as a stark reminder that the UKGC will not hesitate to take strong action against operators who fall short of these essential standards.

This penalty follows a previous £5.85 million fine levied against Betway in 2019 for similar compliance breaches. The recurrence of these issues indicates a persistent problem within the company’s operational framework. Licensed operators are expected to uphold the highest standards of regulatory compliance, particularly concerning customer protection and financial crime prevention. The Commission’s actions highlight an ongoing commitment to ensure that gambling remains fair and safe for all in the UK.
